Hello and welcome to our Swing Collective Community Newsletter! This is the sister program of the Trash Moon Collective from Hot House West. Both are dedicated to nurturing and expanding our local acoustic music community. Here we will have an emphasis on Swing and Jazz. However, the great thing about both of these programs is that they can (should and will) blend the lines between each other as we work toward the common goal of building Salt Lake City into a world-class hub for acoustic music.
COMMUNITY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Derek Crane
If you follow jazz in Utah, there is a good chance you've come across Derek Crane. Known as Sax Spy on the internet, Derek has extensive knowledge of the saxophone family. He plays great, doubles on many horns and his sax mouthpiece collection is nothing short of legendary. Be sure to check out the 'Basics to Bebop' course he produced with Chase Baird on his site.
In addition to being a great player and walking cornucopia of sax knowledge, Derek is deeply vested in the local jazz community. You'll find him at all sorts of jazz gigs, jams, and workshops up and down the Wasatch Front taking pictures on vintage camera gear as he documents jazz in Utah. We appreciate his work in community building as he showcases our incredible Utah talent. Be sure to follow his Instagram pages to learn more!
LOIS LANE
For years we've heard from people frustrated at the lack of listening rooms in Utah. Well, there is no better space to listen to great acoustic music than the house concert setting! Meg Peters from Acoustic Music has generously opened her home to create just that, a listening room dedicated to acoustic music. Come out this Saturday to catch the Hot House West Quintet! But, don't sleep on the rest of the lineup. These shows are a fantastic opportunity to catch top-notch music in an intimate, acoustic environment.
TWO NEW VIDEOS FROM
HOT HOUSE WEST SWING ORCHESTRA
It was a lot of fun getting together and making a couple live videos of the Swing Orchestra. We'd like to shout out Michael Tobian and CJ of Utah Live Bands and Skylark Productions for letting us use their fabulous cyc wall for these videos! Their space is excellent and available for rent. If you're looking for a great production space and an excellent friendly team, get in touch with them!
The Hot House West Swing Orchestra is gearing up for a huge performance at Kingsbury Hall as part of their new Utah Presents Jazz Series. We are honored to share the lineup with Delfeayo Marsalis and Christian McBride! Series tickets are on sale now with individual show tickets opening next week. Help us fill the hall and let's keep Salt Lake on the map as a destination for world-class jazz.
LISTENING ROOM:
What is Bebop?
With our mention of Chase Baird's 'Basics to Bebop' course earlier in the newsletter, you may be asking yourself, what even is bebop?
Bebop marked the evolution of swing and jazz from being primarily a dance music into a music for attentive listening. In the 1940's, bands became smaller and shifted focus onto individual soloists, such as Charlie Parker who is seen as the father of this style. Bebop was characterized by virtuosity, intricate and angular melodies, and fast eighth-note lines that outlined and extended the harmonies of popular jazz songs of the day. This sound has become the basis of our modern jazz vocabulary. There is a lot of really interesting historical context around this musical development that has defined jazz in the modern era.
Check out this great history lesson from Chase Sanborn to learn more.
SAVE THE DATE: SEPTEMBER 6TH
Cosmic Hootenanny II
Our next Hootenanny Fundraiser at the Commonwealth Room is going to be Friday, September 6th! Tickets on sale now!
If you missed out, last February we threw the biggest party for our dear friend Megan Nay and we want to keep the spirit of that heartwarming, chaotic, community uplifting event alive by doing a Hootenanny once or twice a year. These shows will be opportunities to come together in the most righteous of ways and for us to put together an over-the-top theatrical and musical performance that includes a large swath of our community and helps support our organization.
We'll be raising money to support the Hot House West 501(c)(3) to further expand our educational and community programming across the acoustic music landscape in Utah. If you've had a great experience with us this year, come help us raise money to make 2025 even better.
Shoutout to Ginny Cunningham for creating this amazing poster!
