The Nathan Royal Trio (Nathan Royal on guitar, Tony Elison on piano, and David Ian Baker on bass) puts a modern spin on the classic jazz trio tradition. Inspired by the Nat King Cole Trio and the Oscar Peterson Trio, the group blends nostalgic swing with subtle chamber-music influence, punchy arrangements, and fresh reharmonizations. While staying true to the guitar–piano–bass format, the trio gives the guitar a more prominent voice, drawing from the spirit of Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian to create a rhythm-forward sound that feels vibrant, melodic, and refreshingly ego-free.

These performances were shaped in real time, developed through spontaneous rehearsals rather than pre-written charts. The result is music that can be harmonically inventive while still landing with joyful, playful energy and easy listening appeal.

Recorded in a friend’s living room—no soundproofing, no studio gloss—this album embraces the raw intimacy of 1940s/50s-style sessions. Even the faint sounds of the outside world add to the sense of place, making you feel like you’re in the room with the band. Special guests include vocalist Hayley Kirkland and violinist Curtis Woodbury.

Featured tracks

  • “Lotus Blossom” (Billy Strayhorn): Reimagined with rubato freedom, rich swells, and cinematic pacing that lets the tune unfold like a story.

  • “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” (The Ink Spots): A fresh take that opens with virtuosic violin before blooming into a three-voice harmony feature, with Nathan Royal on lead vocal.

  • “These Tears” (Vilray): A haunting, Billie Holiday–tinged gem—discovered via an Instagram reel—and, to the trio’s knowledge, the first recorded version of the song.

This release reflects the mission of Hot House West, a Salt Lake City–based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to creating experiences of connection, learning, and joy through acoustic music. Above all, the Nathan Royal Trio plays music they truly love—crafted with care, designed to delight, and meant to be shared.
